![]() ![]() Beethoven was the first composer of his time to truly break away from the "traditions" of the period. This would be very natural given Haydn's position in music at the time and the influence he had on both, Mozart and Beethoven. ![]() The reason for saying this is that in these WoO 36 trio of piano trios by Beethoven, there is the very essence of Haydn always looming large in the background. On another thread about Ferdinand Ries, it was noted by some how Herr Ries had to live with a lifelong tag of being, in essence, "too much like Beethoven." Yet, as Dave Stybr noted in his post, Beethoven did give much credit to Ries as well. I hope they have won even more prizes since then, they're that good! ![]() ![]() They were awarded a prize from the Bavarian Public Foundation in 1993. These are first-class performers, whose names otherwise, I do not know but would certainly like to. The recording was made at the Pestalozzisaal in Stans on August 9th, 1994. These are performed by the Munich-based Scheurer Quartet, consisting of all siblings: Gertraud Scheurer, piano, Franz Scheurer, violin, Severin Scheurer, viola, and Gundi Scheurer, cello. 1 in E-flat Major, 2 in D Major, and 3 in C Major, all three-movement works. The recording I put on was a "cheapie," on the Discover label of all three piano quartets that comprise Beethoven's WoO 36, Nos. These "WoO" are, in a word, spectacular and most worthwhile listening in terms of sheer musical enjoyment. Today, that happened, albeit whilst doing other things, such as sorting CDs, cleaning around my studio, etc., but I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the music and gave hearing them intense concentration and attention. But I had this recorded literature on a list to give a listen because of the original thread. Thanks Bob I thought there was another thread about Beethovens piano quartets, particularly those without opus number (WoO 36). Has anyone heard either of these or know of any other recordings? Rubenstein Chamber Players on Classical Talent I am looking for information on the LvB piano quartets. ![]()
